RPMFind.net: Emacs 21 RPM. Specifically, for Mandrake; it gives me strange error messages every time I run it after installing over a stock RedHat 7.1 distribution. Building from source works like a charm, though. And it’s so satisfying to see my own hostname on the welcome screen for a change. I should compile more software myself.
MSNBC: AltaVista serving up dated listings [via Slashdot] I have a theory that in any sufficiently mature tech field, there is room for exactly two major players: Microsoft, and one other. Microsoft, because they have the opportunity to illegally extend their existing monopolies in virtually any direction (in this case, integration of MSN Search with Internet Explorer). And one other, in this case Google, of course. Altavista and the other losers can try to remake themselves as niche services, or they can simply die a slow, painful, and lonely death.
Kuro5hin.org: Secure Communications with OpenSSH. Excellent article about the many uses of SSH, including as a telnet replacement and FTP replacement (the two most common uses). I use OpenSSH exclusively on my home network, and my new employer uses it too for branch offices to securely use services in the main ofice. The article even gets into port forwarding, something I’ve known about but haven’t played with too much yet.
NiftyTelnet 1.1 SSH is a free telnet client for classic Mac OS that supports SSH-based remote shells and scp (SSH-based file transfer).
Emacs 21 on classic Mac OS. Download.
First MacEmacs 21 bug I’ve found: getting the list of completions while finding a file (C-x C-f, then TAB) insists on resolving aliases, including aliases to remote servers. If the remote server requires a login, the completion won’t work until I log in successfully; trying to cancel the login box that pops up unannounced gives me no completion list at all, and hitting TAB again simply repeats the process and pops up the login box again. This is especially annoying since I have an alias to my iDisk (which I rarely use) in my Documents folder.
This is the funniest domain name I’ve seen since this.
