A List Apart: Why Don’t You Code For Netscape? A List Apart displays properly in Opera 5, Opera 6, MSIE5, MSIE5.5, MSIE6, Netscape 6, and Mozilla, while its text is available to any browser or Internet device, from Netscape 1.0 to Palm Pilots and web phones. But the site design looks like shit in Netscape 4, because Netscape 4 is the scourge of the Internet with its ridiculously buggy and incomplete CSS support and should immediately be taken out back, thrown in the dumpster, shot, taken out again, stomped on, cut into three pieces, juggled, kicked in the nuts, body checked against the wall, made to wear a dress, and then roughed up a bit for good measure.

Uber.nu: Bitter Waiter Haikus. Of course, these can’t hold a candle to the best haiku ever written:

It worked yesterday.
Today it is not working.
Windows is like that.

Actually, I enjoyed Butterfinger more before it had a privacy policy. Ditto for M&Ms. And Hershey’s. Of course, the sophisticates at Toblerone would not stoop so low, although they do have a fascinating FAQ. If we translate the daily production volume into 100g TOBLERONE bars, laid end to end, it would theoretically stretch over a distance of 283 km. Learn something new every day.

Morons.org: Morons in the news. Current moronic events as they unfold, and our commentary. (I found this site by searching Google — after reading privacy policies of candy bars — for the phrase completely fucking insane.)

AiboHack is back.

iPodHacks: iPod Bug With Lengthy MP3s. With MP3’s that will not fit in the iPod’s ~20MB RAM cache, the iPod’s hard drive spins during the entire duration of the song. This sucks up the battery and significantly reduces the 10 hour playing time. I’ve been hit by this bug too, as I enjoy listening to trance music and have encoded most of my DJ-mixed CDs as a single MP3.

CNET: Apple confirms iPod sleep-mode bug. Apple has identified a bug that can cause a small percentage of iPods to temporarily not wake from sleep when the battery reaches a low charge level. I was hit by this bug last week, and I had to go Apple’s iPod Support page to learn how to reset it. *sigh*

Apple: Fix for iPod Sleep Issue.

What to do if you’ve experienced the iPod sleep-mode bug

Step One: Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack.

Step Two: With the iPod connected to power using the iPod Adapter or a CPU with an Apple Firewire port, perform a hard reset by doing the following: Hold down the ‘Menu’ and ‘Play/Pause’ buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 Seconds.

If the iPod turns on after performing Steps One or Two, please download the most recent version of the iPod software using the link above.

If the iPod does not turn on, disconnect it from power and let it sit unconnected for approximately 24 hours. After this time, repeat Step Two above. If the unit turns on, download the latest version of the iPod Software using the link above.

If your iPod is still unresponsive, go to the AppleCare iPod Support Page to arrange for service at: http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/.

Joel Spolsky: CityDesk Starter Edition. It’s free, fun, and easy to use, so there’s no reason not to download it and try it out! Unless, of course, you’re running Mac OS, Linux, BSD, OS/2, BeOS, Amiga, or some other non-Windows operating system. Then again, if you’re still running an Amiga, you’re a sick, sick puppy. (I can say that; I still have an Apple //e.)

Cringely: Microsoft exacts its revenge. The settlement gives Microsoft the right to effectively kill … SAMBA and other Open Source projects.

Dave Winer: I don’t trust Ashcroft. I know I keep saying this, but my grandfather, who ran from the Nazis, warned me about this when I was a kid, and I will keep passing on what he told me. It’s at this point that we can do something. Later there won’t be anything we can do. This is in response to Ashcroft testifying to Congress that to those who pit Americans against immigrants and citizens against noncitizens, to those who scare peaceloving people with phantoms of lost liberty, my message is this: your tactics only aid terrorists for they erode our unity and diminish our resolve.

The Register: Sub-geeks to the rescue. So, Linux user of modest skills, do not leave all new user training to the hard-cores. You can probably do a better job of teaching new users than some of the hoariest, “been using Unix for 30 years, Linux for 10,” greybeards.
