Cringely: Why the new iMacs will be successful, no matter what they look like. In Steve Jobs’ mind, he has already won. Those of us who last for a few decades in this business find our own kind of peace and Steve Jobs’ is best exemplified by the George Herbert quote, ‘Living well is the best revenge.’

The Register: Windows Update suffers multi-day outage. I would just like to take this opportunity to say that, now that I’m done designing and preparing my J2EE course curriculum (based on almost-all-open-source-except-one tools), I’m now back to using Linux as my primary machine, although there are other forces (a project in the pipeline) that may force me back to Windows kicking and screaming. Or maybe Radio 8, once Dave connects it to Manila so I can keep my current hosted server and URL.

Interestingly, the update to Radio 8, when it comes out, will apparently use the Blogger XML-RPC API to connect to Manila sites, which means that it will also work with Blogger and other weblog systems that implement the same API. Like Blogger but want more features (news aggregation)? Use Radio. Like Manila but want integrated offline editing, synchronization, and backup? Use Radio. Etc. This totally kicks ass. Without this connectivity, Radio could be dismissed — wrongly, but dismissed nonetheless — as a glorified combination of My Yahoo and CityDesk. With this connectivity, Userland positions Radio as the universal weblogging client.

Interview with Jonathan Ive. [via Slashdot] He’s the designer of the iBook, the iPod, and the new lamp-shaped iMac, of which I am using two out of three at this very moment. And if you’ve ever wanted to grab a computer by the scruff of its neck…

Instant survey: mark.jpg vs. mark.gif. Which set is cuter?

Newest Google parlor game: impromptu image galleries on images.google.com. Like searching for spacer.gif or &.gif. [via Kottke]
