Jonathon Delacour on blogging: I’ve also realized that blogging allows me to do the other things I enjoy most: photography and messing with computers. It draws together skills and interests that have always fascinated and motivated me and makes it possible to weave them not just into a new form of communication but into a totally different way of communicating. [emphasis added]

This is the key: not only is a weblog a soapbox (I started mine when I started working at home and lost the ever-important lunchtime conversation), it can be a playground for other hobbies, or a springboard for future ones. Want to be a writer? Write some long opinion pieces on a weblog first. Want to be a journalist? Do some research, track down the story, post it on your weblog and scoop the Big Boys. Photographer? Programmer? Pornographer? Try it on your weblog.
