CNN: Search engines sued over ‘pay-for-placement’. [via MetaFilter, 2/4/2002] The plaintiff claimed that when “Body Solutions” is typed into the search engines’ query field, rival sites using the Body Solutions name appear ahead of the company’s official site.
The search engines being sued are Altavista, Kanoodle.com, FindWhat.com, and Overture (previously Goto). Google does not allow advertisers to buy better placement within search results; they put all ads in a separate section away from the search results, color them differently, and label them as “sponsored links.”
