Dave Winer thinks CSS is incomplete: Look at all the problems people are having doing basic webloggish things in CSS. I shall pass over in silence the fact that people are only having trouble with the basics because they have no predefined themes on which to build, because I know that Userland is now building CSS-based themes. Instead, I want to turn the argument around: imagine, for a second, that CSS had come first, that everyone was familiar with it and its quirks, and that now a small but vocal minority was attempting to educate the community on the benefits of table-based design. What would the CSS-minded community say?

• “Whatdya mean I can’t do absolute positioning?”
• “Whatdya mean I need a separate print-friendly page?”
• “Whatdya mean I can’t let my users switch themes on the fly?”
• “Whatdya mean I can’t structure my documents properly?”
• “Whatdya mean I need to use tons of 1-pixel images just to do simple spacing between elements?”
• “Whatdya mean I need to nest tables five levels deep to get the layout I want?”
• “Whatdya mean I need to specify style information in every single table cell?”
