CSS is spreading

Joe Gregorio: “If all goes well you should now see a select box in the upper right hand corner of this web page which allows you to select the style of the content.” Try that with your fancy server-side CMS! (I always thought it was disingenuous that a certain pro-CMS advocate kept saying “well, I can just do that in my CMS!” when in fact Manila doesn’t even do this. Manila has a regular template and a “printer-friendly” template. That’s it! And they’re not even tied to the same URL (it uses query string parameters to decide which template to use, not cookies, so you can’t “choose” a template and have it stick when you come back to the same site later). So all this “well, that should really be a function of the CMS” is just hot air, because their CMS doesn’t even do that!)

Update: the pro-CMS camp replies:

[T]he underlying CMS, underneath Manila, has totally programmable templates. Manila is a simplification of the Frontier website framework, to make it easier and more accessible.

In other words, Manila doesn’t do that, but it could be made to do that very easily, if the vendor decided that that sort of thing was important, which they haven’t. Meanwhile, Joe has a style switcher.
