The key to piracy

CNET: Is hardware key to piracy crackdown? [via Wesley Felter]

“Every single device has to be secure,” said Darko Kirovski, a researcher studying watermarking and security technologies at Microsoft Research. “If one device is not secure, then this (digital content protection) doesn’t work.”

All software can be cracked with software. All hardware can be cracked with hardware. All previous attempts at copy protection have failed. The only long-term effect of copy protection is to immortalize those who defeat it.
