Did a little digging and found some other choice quotes from quote-miller Tad Clarke of Direct Marketers News, which, as far as I can tell, is a one-man operation (not that there’s anything wrong with that ;-).
We shouldn’t see e-mail as a threat [to snail-mail-based direct marketing] but as another tool to reach the customer. Gartner also recommended limiting the number of e-mails sent to consumers to no more than two a day. Try that for a day or two and watch your response rates plummet.
Not that lawmakers should walk around saying, ‘We can’t enact more privacy legislation. Why, it may cause the demise of the whole postal system.’ But they should factor it in when they’re thinking opt-in is the answer.
Why some states want to prohibit the use of predictive dialers entirely is beyond me…. Many people I know….are quite content with the effects of predictive dialing. They know telemarketing isn’t going away. Dead air allows them to recognize a telemarketing call and hang up without having to fend off a pesky sales rep. And in these days of cordless phones, the calls don’t force people off their couches the way they once did. As a result, the unintended effect of predictive dialing is that telemarketers’ calls are less intrusive than they’re intended to be.(quoted on StopJunkCalls.com)
