OpenOffice 1.0 is out

OpenOffice, a comprehensive open source Office productivity suite, has reached 1.0. (In case you’re not familiar with the open source world, this means it’s rock solid now. Really.) You can try to download OpenOffice (there are binaries available for Windows, Linux on Intel hardware, and Solaris), but since it appeared on Slashdot yesterday, all download sites and all mirrors have been jammed.

Later: got it from this mirror in the Netherlands.

Even later: It opens all the Microsoft Word documents I could find (I don’t use that many). It opens all the slides we created for our J2EE training course. It opens all the other Powerpoint presentations I can find too. I’m extremely impressed so far.
