Problems using Software Update in OS X 10.1.0

Latest question answered in Dive Into OS X: I installed OS X 10.1.0 and Software Update shows no updates. It’s due to the July 18 security update which protects users from DNS spoofing attacks when using Software Update.

This came up in my last OS X class, since we use 10.1.0 install discs. Immediately after install, Software Update used to come up with updates; now it’s useless until you manually install the July 18 update. Unfortunately, the July 18 update used to require 10.1.1, which meant several more manual downloads (since you couldn’t get them through Software Update, right).

Anyway, now there’s July 18 security update for 10.1.0.

This is more for my benefit than yours. Statistics show that most Mac OS X users install updates on a regular basis, since Software Update runs automatically and it’s not immediately obvious how to make it stop (it’s in the Software Update pane of System Preferences). And hopefully nobody is using 10.1.0 install discs anymore, except in Apple training classes.
