Radio days

Electricity rocks my world.

Electricity, phone, cable TV, and internet access were all restored during the night, for which I give thanks. No electricity == no heat, no stove, no refrigeration. (Luckily we still had gas-powered hot water.) We spent yesterday afternoon at a friend’s house who has a gas fireplace. As he put it: It’s never like this; the last time we had massive power failures like this was Hurricane Fran in 1996. And last winter when we had that blizzard? It’s never like that; it was the worst blizzard in 20 years. What you have to understand about North Carolina weather is that it’s always ‘never like this’.

We spent yesterday evening at my neighbor’s house, huddled around candles, cooking Chinese noodles on her gas stove, listening to whatever happened to be on the radio.
