I recently introduced my two-year-old to GCompris and TuxPaint. This morning we spent 20 minutes playing with the stamp tool, and he would like to share the result. The conversation went something like this:
- Me
- (Loads saved picture in browser) Look, that’s your fish.
- Him
- Yeah, fish fish fish fish fish.
- Me
- Can I share your fish?
- Him
- YEAH!
So, as his parent and legal guardian, I am licensing it under the CC ShareAlike License on his behalf.

Allow me to project ten years into the future (based on my experience with my 10 and 12-year-old children):
You: Look, I found the web page with that wonderful fish picture you did when you were two! Isn’t it great?
Him: OMFG, Dad, I can’t *believe* you put that online. I am SO embarrassed. Other kids’ parents don’t put their crap online for the whole world to look at. TAKE THAT DOWN!
You: Um…well…I can take it down, but it’s already been used elsewhere by a number of people because of the Creative Commons license. In fact, your middle school science teacher uses it as a background on her myClassroom page!
Him: [door slams]
Just kidding. (Mostly.) And the image is gorgeous!

Huh. That’s better than most images I’ve seen that have been created with the GIMP… kudos.

Yep the stamps in TuxPaint have always been my kids favourite thing to play with on a PC. Have to say I kinda like messing with it myself, being artistically challenged as I am.
As for embarrassment, my 7-year old was horrified when I posted a copy of a letter he sent to a yoghurt manufacturer on my blog. He wasn’t so annoyed when he realised that it worked!

Did you ask him whether he wanted to allow commercial uses? (I kid, I kid…)

I love TuxPaint. We had a Free Culture workshop in Reading (near London) and invited kids along to mess around with free software. TuxPaint was a hit with everyone who used it.
I think my favourite thing is to put a bird on the back of another animal and have the bird say something stupid or rude.
I always sign my images with my age in true kid style.

Are you mimicking “buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo” on purpose? ;)
