Here’s some high-quality 4320×6480 (20″×30″) posters suitable for printing: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. And one 30″×20″ for good measure.

All collages are licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 2.0 license.

Next up is a release of the tight, 30-line python script you use to generate these, yes?

Not like it would be difficult code to write, given a good Flickr library, it just seems like the next step.

sudo aptitude install imagemagick

In a directory of any-shaped originals (highly destructive, make a backup first!):

mogrify -verbose -resize x360 -resize '480x<' -resize 50% -gravity center -crop 240x180+0+0 +repage *

And to create the poster:

montage * -geometry 240x180x0x0 -tile 18x36 ../output-4320x6480.jpg

or

montage * -geometry 240x180x0x0 -tile 27x24 ../output-6480x4320.jpg

or

montage * -resize 120x90 -geometry 120x90x0x0 -tile 6x108 -quality 50 ../output-720x9720.jpg

I did whip up a stupid Python script to randomly rename the pictures so I could get different posters. montage doesn't have a randomize flag.

Hmm, that doesn’t sound right, now does it? Let me rephrase, I saw butterfly 384 and 385 — nah, still not right. I saw two lovely butterflies, whose names I do not know, in Kew Gardens one lovely afternoon, and they kindly allowed me to take their portraits.

Ah, that’s some impressive ImageMagick-foo.

Approx 0.6% of the people are allergic to butterflies, this post might scare the hell out of one who unfortunately stumbles in here.

Better put on a sign that reads ‘Viewer Discretion Advised’ at the top. -D
